Famous Gurudwaras in Sultanpur Lodhi
Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district of Punjab is a religious place. The main attractions of Sultanpur Lodhi is its several historical Gurudwaras . As Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikh religion spent around 14 years in Sultanpur Lodhi, most of these Gurudwaras are related to many important incidents related to his lifetime. All these Gurudwaras at Sultanpur Lodhi, except Gurudwara Bebe Nanaki Ji, are under the administration of the SGPC through a local committee.Gurudwara Shree Bebe Nanki Ji
Gurudwara Shree Bebe Nanki Ji was constructed in the 1970s as an honour to the memory of Bebe Nanaki, the elder sister of Guru Ji. Here actual house is inside the old town in Mohalla Cchimbian. It is a three storeyed old building where she and her husband Jai Ram are believed to have lived. But the nearby places of this house are now in private possession. So Bebe Nanaki Istri Satsang Charitable Trust constructed a public monument in the form of a gurudwara in 1970.Gurudwara Shree Bebe Nanki Ji
There is a central hall in Gurudwara Bebe Nanki Ji. The Guru Granth Sahib is seated in a white marble palaki at the far end of the hall. He is also seated in a small side room in the Gurudwara, which symbolizes Bebe Nanaki’s own lodging. You can see a square doomed room with arched copings above the hall roof over the sanctum. The corners of the hall roof are decorated with bulbous domes.
Gurudwara Ber Sahib
Gurudwara Ber Sahib is the principal shrine at Sultanpur and it is located on the shore of the rivulet Kali Bein that is half a kilometer to the west of the old town. It is said that Guru Nanak Dev Ji had performed his morning ablutions in the Bein and meditated sitting under a Ber tree daily for 14 years, nine months and 13 days. It is described in the Janam Sakhis that Guru Nanak had a direct communion with the Divine during one such ablution. You can still see this Beri tree in the Gurudwara, which is green and bears fruits.Gurudwara Ber Sahib was constructed by the side of the Ber tree under which Guru Nanak was belived to be meditated. Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala built the present building of Gurudwara Ber Sahib. The Gurudwara has a marble floored hall with high ceiling, a small entrance gallery. It is standing on a high plinth supported by octagonal columns. The sanctum sanctorum is at the far end and it is marked off by a high archway with floral designs in stucco. Guru Sahib is seated here on a white marble canopied throne. Daily services and important sikh anniversaries are observed here. The most important celebration here is Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birthday on each November, which is attended by large number of devotees.
Gurdwara Shree Hatt Sahib
On the recommendation of the brother-in-law Jai Ram, Guru Nanak Dev Ji got employment in Sultanpur Lodhi as the accountant of the provisions of Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi. With his diligent work, Guru Ji could impress the Nawab. He also spent his evenings and night singing the praises of God with his friends. Gurudwara Shree Hatt Sahib was built on the place where Guru Nanak was working for the Nawab. The measuring weights (stones) (thirteen polished stones of various sizes), which are believed to be used by Guru Ji, is displayed in a glass cabinet inside the Gurudwara.The Gurudwara consists a hall and a square sanctum in its middle. There is a square room above the sanctum. It also has a wide arched coping and a lotus dome topped by a gold-plated finial.
