Famous Gurudwaras in Sultanpur Lodhi

Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district of Punjab is a religious place. The main attractions of Sultanpur Lodhi is its several historical Gurudwaras . As Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikh religion spent around 14 years in Sultanpur Lodhi, most of these Gurudwaras are related to many important incidents related to his lifetime. All these Gurudwaras at Sultanpur Lodhi, except Gurudwara Bebe Nanaki Ji, are under the administration of the SGPC through a local committee.

Gurudwara Shree Bebe Nanki Ji

Gurudwara Shree Bebe Nanki Ji was constructed in the 1970s as an honour to the memory of Bebe Nanaki, the elder sister of Guru Ji. Here actual house is inside the old town in Mohalla Cchimbian. It is a three storeyed old building where she and her husband Jai Ram are believed to have lived. But the nearby places of this house are now in private possession. So Bebe Nanaki Istri Satsang Charitable Trust constructed a public monument in the form of a gurudwara in 1970.

Gurudwara Shree Bebe Nanki Ji

There is a central hall in Gurudwara Bebe Nanki Ji. The Guru Granth Sahib is seated in a white marble palaki at the far end of the hall. He is also seated in a small side room in the Gurudwara, which symbolizes Bebe Nanaki’s own lodging. You can see a square doomed room with arched copings above the hall roof over the sanctum. The corners of the hall roof are decorated with bulbous domes.

Gurudwara Ber Sahib

Gurudwara Ber Sahib is the principal shrine at Sultanpur and it is located on the shore of the rivulet Kali Bein that is half a kilometer to the west of the old town. It is said that Guru Nanak Dev Ji had performed his morning ablutions in the Bein and meditated sitting under a Ber tree daily for 14 years, nine months and 13 days. It is described in the Janam Sakhis that Guru Nanak had a direct communion with the Divine during one such ablution. You can still see this Beri tree in the Gurudwara, which is green and bears fruits.

Gurudwara Ber Sahib was constructed by the side of the Ber tree under which Guru Nanak was belived to be meditated. Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala built the present building of Gurudwara Ber Sahib. The Gurudwara has a marble floored hall with high ceiling, a small entrance gallery. It is standing on a high plinth supported by octagonal columns. The sanctum sanctorum is at the far end and it is marked off by a high archway with floral designs in stucco. Guru Sahib is seated here on a white marble canopied throne. Daily services and important sikh anniversaries are observed here. The most important celebration here is Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birthday on each November, which is attended by large number of devotees.

Gurdwara Shree Hatt Sahib

On the recommendation of the brother-in-law Jai Ram, Guru Nanak Dev Ji got employment in Sultanpur Lodhi as the accountant of the provisions of Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi. With his diligent work, Guru Ji could impress the Nawab. He also spent his evenings and night singing the praises of God with his friends. Gurudwara Shree Hatt Sahib was built on the place where Guru Nanak was working for the Nawab. The measuring weights (stones) (thirteen polished stones of various sizes), which are believed to be used by Guru Ji, is displayed in a glass cabinet inside the Gurudwara.
The Gurudwara consists a hall and a square sanctum in its middle. There is a square room above the sanctum. It also has a wide arched coping and a lotus dome topped by a gold-plated finial.

Gurudwara Shree Kothri Sahib

Guru Nanak worked as accountant for Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi. But his jealous elements reported to the Nawab that Guru Ji was stealing from the inventory and thus he was jailed temporarily. But Nawab realized that he was innocent, while the inventory was checked. So, Nawab apologized to Guru Nanak profusely and offered him a promotion to Prime Minister of the state. But, he had decided to dedicate his life completely to the spread of Sikhism and so he refused that position. Guru Shree Kothri Sahib is the destination, where Guru Ji was detained, while his accounts where being checked on the basis of a false complaint lodged by his enemies. It is a narrow low roofed cell in a small house in Mohalla Vaddian.

Gurudwara Shree Guru Ka Bagh

Guru Nanak lived in Sultanpur Lodhi for 14 years and he married Baba Lakshmi Chand from this city. Gurudwara Shree Guru Ka Bagh is the place, which he used as his home. His two sons Baba Sri Chand and Baba Lakshmi Chand were born at this place. You can see a well here from which Bibi Nanaki Ji was taking water to prepare langar for Guru Ji. It is a flat-roofed hall. The Guru Granth Sahib is seated on a rectangular platform in the hall.

Gurudwara Shree Sant Ghat

Gurudwara Shree Sant Ghat is the place where Guru Nanak reappeared three days after he disappeared at Bein. It is located on the bank of the river “Bein”. This place is near to Gurudwara Ber Sahib. After coming out of the Bein, Guru Ji gave a ‘mool mantar’ to the entire world. Guruji used to meditate here. From this place, he had left Sultanput Lodhi to serve the world.

Gurudwara Shree Sehra Sahib

Located in mohalla Dhiraan, Gurudwara Shree Sehra Sahib is dedicated to Guru Arjun. He, on his way to Dalla for attending the marriage of Har Gobind, his son, passed through Sultanpur Lodhi in 1604.The Gurudwara is situated in a brick paved walled compound. It has an octagonal domed room. Guru Granth Sahib is seated in this room.

Gurudwara Shree Antaryamta

While Guru Nanak was in Sultanpur Lodhi, Muslims asked him whether he was Hindu Guru or Muslim Guru. His reply was that he was the Guru of both. So he was asked to do namaz at a nearby mosque. Even though Guruji went there, he stood straight, while all the muslims was offering Namaz. Muslims got angry and they asked him the reason for not doing namaz. As a reply Guru Ji said that everybody was doing namaz only physically, not mentally. All people’s mind was on other things. So Muslims realized that Guru Ji was a man with divine power. Gurudwara Shree Antaryamta is located at the place where this incident occurred.
